about

Stravinsky wrote two tangos during his career, the first in Histoire du Soldat in 1918, and the second for solo piano in 1940. Both works—Histoire and Tango—were motivated in part by practical considerations, and both have come to us in several instrumentations. Although Stravinsky notated Tango for solo piano, he clearly intended it to be arranged. Its first instrumentation, for twenty-two wind players with percussion, guitar, piano, and string quintet (by Felix Guenther, approved by Stravinsky) premiered under Benny Goodman in 1941. Other versions, for dance band, for vocalist, and for violin and piano were conceived; Stravinsky orchestrated the piece himself in 1953, for clarinets, brass, guitar, and strings. Our version is arranged by John Gunther, for clarinet, guitar, piano, and percussion.
