about

Clapping Music was inspired by palmas, traditional hand-clapping patterns that accompany flamenco dancing. Reich created his pattern (3-2-1-2 claps, separated by rests) by adapting the African Atsiagbekor bell pattern. One performer loops the pattern throughout, while a second performer rotates the pattern against the first, beginning in unison, and then successively jumping one eighth note ahead. Since the basic pattern (including its rests) takes up twelve eighth notes, the process produces eleven shifted patterns, framed by the original pattern at the beginning and end. The two performers thus begin and end together, and in between produce a panoply of changing composite patterns. (Special composite instances occur when all twelve eighth notes fill in—at the first shift, the midpoint shift, and the penultimate shift.)
